Radiator / Engine Cooling The radiator is the primary method used to eliminate excess heat in your engine. Radiator fluid is pumped through the engine where it absorbs heat from the engine. From there the fluid is transferred to the radiator where it to releases heat as it passes through the core—or fins—of the radiator. Finally, air passing through the fins disperses the heat into the atmosphere and effectively cools your engine.

The typical 50/50 mixture of water and coolant/antifreeze  allows the water to reach higher temperatures without boiling and prevents corrosion within the engine or radiator.

Over time, the coolant/antifreeze weakens and no longer protects as well as it first did. This creates the possibility of rust and sludge building up inside the radiator, effectively blocking or constricting the flow of the radiator fluid. When passages are restricted, the fluid doesn’t cool properly and hotter than normal fluid is sent back to the engine. The end result is an engine that easily overheats.

A good preventative measure is to exchange or flush the radiator fluid periodically to maintain the proper ratios.

New radiator fluid with the proper ratio of water to coolant/antifreeze is then pumped back into the system. Your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations are followed when selecting the type and ratio of water to coolant/antifreeze. Radiator caps are inspected for defects and the fluid levels for the radiator overflow tank are filled to the proper level.
